About Ruby Rose
Ruby Rose was born in Paris to a German fashion photographer and the first black model on the cover of international Vogue in 1971. At a young age, Ruby followed in her mother’s footsteps, modeling in print ads and fashion magazines for years. After spending her youth in front of a camera, she migrated away from the fashion industry and became a double-boarded physician: Emergency Medicine and Integrative Medicine.
Ruby was the key person in developing the Discovery Channel series, This Came Out Of Me, a docu-series following her and her colleagues, treating patients and conducting unique procedures at ER facilities around the Lone Star state. Aside from being essential to the development of the series, she also serves as the host.
Using her medical expertise as an ER and Integrative physician, Ruby expands traditional treatments with alternative therapies in her own private integrative practice, Rose Integrative Health. Bridging the gap between traditional medicine is not new to the medical world, but the benefits of an integrative health system are only now achieving recognition. It is Ruby’s passion to continue to raise awareness of those benefits and help those who have run out of options going down the traditional medicine route.
Family & Upbringing
Being raised in the fashion industry offered Ruby a unique view of the world during her childhood. Ruby’s father, acclaimed photographer Uli Rose, was a prominent figure in Paris and New York, working with every well-known model, magazine, and agency during his career.
Ulrich “Uli” Rose is a 3rd generation German photographer. Yes, 3rd generation. Starting his career as a fashion photographer, he loved capturing real-life imagery. During his early years as a photographer, Uli enjoyed photographing women of color, something that was not mainstream during that period. In the late 60s and early 70s, Uli photographed emerging models; Iman, Pat Cleveland, Bethanne Hardison, Grace Jones, and Carol Labrie, Ruby’s Mother.
Carol Labrie took a roundabout way to the fashion industry. Dancing at Whiskey a Go-Go and hanging with her half-brother, Paul Mooney, in LA where Carol befriended many prominent musicians, comedians, directors, and actors. Through her connections, she was in a few feature films and commercials. It was Bob Rafelson who told her she needed to go to Paris to make a career for herself. In 1969, Labrie landed in Paris and quickly became a central figure in the fashion and art world, working with Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent and Ruby’s godfather, Kenzo.
Three years after Ruby was born in Paris, Carol, Uli, Ruby and her older brother, David Raysse, moved to New York City. Ruby’s older brother attended the Steiner School and Ruby, The Hewett School for Girls. After high school, Ruby went on to Vassar College and her parents moved to the Berkshires with her three younger brothers: Max, Franz and Billy who are raising their own families. After getting her undergraduate degree, Ruby went on to Tufts University for Medical school and did her residency at UMass Medical Center in Worcester, MA. She now lives in Austin, TX, where she serves as Medical Director for Signature Care Emergency Center while building her own integrative practice and serving as Chief Medical Officer for the Karisha Community Center for Wellness, which is a innovative, integrative lifestyle-based alternative healthcare system scheduled to open in the Spring of 2023.
Like so many, 2021 was a challenging year for Ruby. In February, her mother passed away while being held in the arms by her brothers. Carol LaBrie Rose left on her own terms and surrounded by loved ones. Her passing made the entire family revisit her legacy, one that crossed barriers and oceans. Ruby’s father gave her an appreciation for the visual world and the openness she shares with others. Her mother gave her physical beauty and a tenacious drive, which she is instilling in her own three children.
